Project 5.0 {Static.Dynamic}

The final project for the semester will be to create a compelling narrative based on one of the landscapes and to illustrate that narrative through animation and illustration. You will form groups in order to research the landscape, create a narrative, and pool your resources. The landscape will be illustrated using one of the following terms: emergence, homeostasis, transmogrification, transmission, delineation, or preceptorial. The term that is picked should guide the group’s animations and illustrations.

Landscapes . Locations

  1. New York, NY . Times Square
  2. Boston, MA . North End
  3. Rio, Brazil . Copacabana
  4. New Orleans, LA . French Quarter
  5. San Francisco, CA . Chinatown
  6. Atchafalaya, LA . I-10/Habitat
  7. Nevada-Arizon . Hoover Dam
  8. Panama . Panama Canal
  9. Baghdad, Iraq . Green Zone
  10. England-France . Channel Tunnel

The project will have four components; research, storyboard, 30 second animations, and a composite image. Each group will work together to develop a fluid series of animations and imagery that express a single body of work. The animations should be viewed in a particular order, determined by the group, and should function as chapters or sections of a larger narrative.

{Research 001} The first step will be for the group to create a posting that consolidates everyone’s research and outlines the initial ideas. This will be done using a forum post on moodle. Each group will make a posting that outlines their overall motivation and define the term they have picked. This should include the clip/passage (either text, image, or compressed video file) and the aesthetic or framework that will be the guide group’s work. DUE 11.16.09 @ 11:30am

{Storyboard 002} Individuals will then create a storyboard in Adobe Illustrator using images and text to explain the development of the narrative. The storyboards should explain through imagery the key moments of the animation, explain further details with text, and describe the ambiance/mood/aesthetic. The individual storyboard should be created through a coordinated effort of the group. Although the storyboard will be developed individually, they should share a similar format and aesthetic. The storyboard will be delivered as a PDF file and submitted to the server.  DUE 11.25.09 @ 11:30am (or sooner)

{Animation 003} The animation is a part of a larger whole but should express your interpretation of the term and the landscape you are exploring. The animation will be 30 seconds long and should hold the viewers attention for this time span. The animations are narratives revealing your expression of the landscape using the term you picked, the animation should be descriptive and illustrative. You should explore working within and breaking the rules of the natural world to your advantage.

{Composite 004} A still image will be created at 18”x24” @ 200dpi that will further explain your 30 second animation within a single moment. The still should be a cross between diagram and illustration but should focus on expressing a similar narrative developed in your animation. The composite will explore dynamic and temporal representation using a single image. The composite image should combine 3ds max, Photoshop, and Illustrator in order to create a compelling illustration.
